Various times and places during the Summer

The Gardens & Wild Flowers Group meets about once a month during the summer for field excursions.

In October - we visited a favourite venue of ours, Achnacloich Garden, near Connel hoping for a good show of autumn colours!

16 of us visited Greenshoots Community Garden at Dunollie in very warm weather, which encouraged a number of different butterflies to enjoy the many colourful blooms. The group was made very welcome indeed by John Pettit. Everyone is welcome to pop in when the garden is open - usually Tuesday to Thursday, and some Fridays, from 10 am till 4 pm. The entrance is adjacent to the main drive to the big house. Volunteers to help with the garden are particularly welcome!

Recent activities include
Visit to Arduaine National Trust Gardens, Visit to Berandhu, Port Appin, Kilchoan Open Days; Visit to The Old Nursery, Taynuilt and wild flower walk along the old laid with David Croucher, owner and keen naturalist.; Visit to The Secret Garden, Lismore; Visit to Dal an Eas garden near Kilmore, opened for us by private arrangement.

A very successful Gardeners’ Questions comfortable community room at the Oban Fire Station. Our three professional panelists handled our questions very well with knowledge and good humour. Time was limited, and we didn’t make plans for the coming growing season, but it is hoped to bring together a group that will take things forward shortly. Meantime, we can all enjoy the unfolding wonder of Spring in local gardens, woodlands and heathlands.

This group is convened by Dot.

Braevallich Farm Gardens, by Ford - an absolute treat!

A farmhouse in the distance. In the foreground A swathes of short azaleas, but also drifts of blue Mecanopsis poppies and candelabra primulas

Oban u3a Gardens and Wildflowers Group recently visited Braevallich Farm Gardens, by arrangement with the owner, Philip Bowden-Smith. The gardens are stunning at present - a fantastic display of unusual rhododendrons and azaleas in a beautiful woodland setting in the upper garden, complete with lovely suspension bridge. The lower garden round the farmhouse is quite different, with swathes of shorter azaleas, but also drifts of blue Mecanopsis poppies and candelabra primulas.
Through the Scottish Gardens Scheme, the gardens are open to the public on Sunday 2nd June from 12.30 till 5.30. A donation of £6 towards Mary’s Meals is requested - and these gardens are well worth it!!
