This group of happy bookworms reads widely and we cover a general range of topics.
The book for June is 'Difficult Women' by Helen Lewis.
In May we read '44 Scotland Street' by Alexander McCall Smith.
The book for April was“The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusak, the May book is “44 Scotland Street" by Alexander McCall Smith.
We chose to read “The Peppered Moth”, by Margaret Drabble over the festive season. In addition, and because we have a longer gap than usual between meetings, the novel, “The Hundred Year-old Man who climbed out of the Window and Disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson was also highly recommended by some members. It will be interesting to hear the opinions of each novel when we meet..
If you are a reader, come and join us in a social and relaxing atmosphere as we “talk books.“
In November, we read “The Cellist of Sarajevo” by Steven Galloway, a Canadian author. We look forward to our discussion of this insightful book.
In October we read The Rainbow or Women in Love, both of which are by D H Lawrence. These were suggested by our member Rosemary Power, who kindly gave us a talk on the links between these novels and Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, which we have recently read. This was a most interesting and illuminating session.
By agreement, we held a moratorium on meeting in July, in order to have a summer break. For that reason we decided to read two very different books for that period. These were Cold Comfort Farm, by Stella Gibbons, and Lady in Waiting, an autobiography by Anne Glenconner - both light and summery reading, but also quite unlike each other. This should make for a lively conversation when we meet later!
We still have some places for others to join our Group 4, so if your taste in books is for a wide variety of subjects , come and join us in our monthly meetings and enjoy the fun of our relaxing but focused discussions.
In June we discussed “Travels with a Donkey” by RL Stevenson.
We read “The Glassmaker” by Tracy Chevalier, and this was enjoyed on several different levels, with a lively and interesting discussion taking place. We also briefly discussed a previous read:“Maurice and Marilyn”, which led to some diverse responses and some surprises.
If you are interested in joining us, please come along and contribute to a wide variety of books in a friendly and relaxing setting.
