Forecast snow limited us to a potentially less satisfactory Zoom meeting. However, the choice of The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas ensured that it was a very lively, if one-sided, discussion. It was almost universally disliked, with everyone finding it difficult to empathise with any of the characters as they exhibited racism, sexism, foul language and self-centredness. There was too much sex and it was BAD! It was assumed that the author's intention was to give the reader insight into Australian multiculturalism, but it was superficial, with the female characters as caricatures. Not a good introduction to Australian suburbia. We wondered how it had made the Booker Prize longlist.
